A wet and breezy afternoon
greeted this local Division 3 hurling derby on the
The visitors started
spritely and had slotted over two points in the first couple of minutes from
the sticks of Conor Compston and Crickie McKee. St Teresa’s responded
with a good point from wing-forward Brendy Power, before St Agnes hit another
two scores, Conor Compston and Conor Mclean the scorers. St Teresa’s were
struggling with the slippy pitch and accuracy was missing, as they 4 wides in succession.
Conor O’Rawe was found in space by Philly Maguire to point for St Teresa’s,
much to the delight of his mum; then 2 more St Teresa’s points, Brian
Curran following good build up from Robbie Gallagher and Colm McGoldrick, and
Jordan McAllister, who reacted quickly following a save from the St Agnes
keeper. Teams were level after 13 mins. Super
The second half began
slowly and when Grieve slotted over a free in the third minute of the half, to
level the scores, it seemed that the Aggies would begin to get the upper
hand. Gallagher was having a stormer in defence and found Power unmarked
who pointed from 30 yards to put
St Teresa’s back in the lead. Two minutes later a fantastic movement from
St Teresa’s involving the steadfast Carey, Gallagher, and O’Hara found Conor
McCann free, who buried the sliothair in the bottom
left corner of the net. The home side now led 1-7 to 0.6. Grieve scored another free,
before Maguire pointed from a

Then a moment of brilliant
individual skill. From a resulting throw-in between 2 players in
midfield, Maguire won the ball, soloed passed three St Agnes defenders, passed the ball
over the full back’s head, recaught the ball, and sweetly tucked the ball into
the net. 2.9 to 0.8 to the home team and effectively game over. The
final score of the game saw Maguire and O’Hara team up well with McCann who
powered over a point to confirm a deserved win for St Teresa’s.
